The Flat iron steak: Where it Came From

Also known as the Top Blade Steak, the flat iron steak is now very common in most menus in grocery stores and restaurants. Without a doubt, this steak is in fact very sumptuous and is a great dish to serve on the table but do you know where and how the flat iron steak was developed? This very popular steak was developed by a group from University of Florida and University of Nebraska. Initially, this group was asked to solve a problem on what they should do to with the waste cut of beef found on the shoulder of a cow. Though this part of meat was rather tender and flavorful, a tough and hard piece of connective tissue is found in the middle part of the meat.

To solve this problem, the group developed a method to cut the meat therefore resulting to an amazingly perfect cut of meat and aside from that, this meat was developed into a meat perfect for a steak recipe. This meat turned into steak was named flat iron steak because its appearance looks very much like a metal flat iron used in the olden days as well as its rectangular shape and thickness.

The flat iron steak, like other non-loin steak, tastes well when marinated and tastes best when cooked beyond medium. Almost everyone who loves buying flat iron steak find it very easy to cut the meat in half. It is because of cut in the center that can be traced through the middle.

The flat iron steak comes with a rich and deep flavor making it perfect not only as a steak but as a meat for any types of dishes. It is also often compared to Flat Steaks and is best grilled and cooked over heat above the medium level. Unless you go for the thin cut, do not cook the steak at a very high temperature but if you want to have it thick, cook it at a relatively lower temperature.

If you would go to a butcher and tell him that you would like to order a flat iron steak, do not b surprised if he would stare at you blankly. It would be better if you would mention a more particular name. If you would like to really buy this meat from a butcher, why don't you just order a top blade steak instead. Anyhow, they are the same and are perfect for a great steak meal.

Here's what our members are saying ...

"My wife recently gave me a couple of The Grilling Coach's DVDs - SOUTHERN, SMOKED, GLAZED HAM on the GRILL and REAL SOUTHERN BARBEQUE.  All the recipes are, in a word, outstanding!  The step-by-step instructions are skillfully explained at a pace that's easy to follow and understand.  I've been smoke cooking and making my own sausage for almost 40 years; and, I know my way around the kitchen.  Believe me when I tell you - you'll love these DVDs."
